Questions

Everything people ask

Made to order works a little differently from a warehouse. Here is how, in plain terms. If your question is not here, email us and a real person answers.

Ordering and making

How long until it arrives?

Two stages, and the second one is the only one most shops count. Your piece is produced after you order it, then it ships. Checkout shows you the transit estimate, so allow production time on top of that.

For a gift with a date attached, order about two weeks ahead, and further out in December. If you are working to a deadline, email us before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it will make it.

Why not just keep them in stock?

Because then we would be guessing what you want and discounting whatever we guessed wrong. Nothing here sits in a warehouse waiting to be marked down. No dead stock, no clearance bin, and no pressure to shift last season before we can make the next thing.

The trade is a few days of production. We think it is worth it.

Can I change or cancel an order?

If it has not gone into production yet, yes. Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we will catch it if we can.

Once production has started we cannot pull it back, because that piece was made specifically for you and there is nobody else to sell it to. See returns for what happens if it turns up wrong.

Do I need an account to order?

No. You can check out as a guest and never make one.

An account is only worth it if you want your order history and tracking in one place, or you expect to order again. You can also create one at checkout with a single tick.

Can you make something custom?

Ask. Custom work is most of the reason this shop exists, and a fair few of the designs on the site started as somebody’s specific request.

Tell us what you have in mind on the contact page. If it is a bulk or team order, say how many and roughly when you need them.

Shipping

How much is shipping?

Free on orders over $50. Under that, rates are calculated live at checkout from your actual address and what is in the basket, so you see the real number before you pay rather than a padded flat rate.

Do you ship outside the United States?

Yes. International rates are calculated at checkout the same way.

Customs or import charges are set by your country, not by us, and we do not collect them. Those are settled with the carrier on delivery.

Where is my tracking number?

It is emailed the moment the parcel is handed to the carrier, which is the end of production rather than the moment you order. If your order still says it is being made, tracking has not been created yet.

If tracking has gone quiet or the parcel is late, reply to that email and we will chase the carrier for you.

Can I ship it straight to the person it is for?

Yes. Enter their address as the shipping address at checkout. We do not put prices on anything in the parcel.

If it turns up wrong

It arrived damaged, or it is not what I ordered

Email us within 30 days with a photo and we will replace it or refund it. No argument, no restocking fee.

The photo is not us being difficult. It tells us what went wrong in production so it does not happen to the next person.

It never turned up

Same answer. Email us within 30 days and we will replace it or refund it, and we will deal with the carrier ourselves.

I changed my mind. Can I send it back?

Honestly, usually not. Every piece is produced for you specifically after you order, so a change-of-mind return leaves us with something nobody else ordered.

If you catch it before production starts, email us and we will cancel it. And if the thing itself is wrong in any way, that is a different question with a much easier answer, above.

Looking after it

Enamel camp mugs

Hand wash only, and never in the microwave. It is steel under the enamel, so a microwave is genuinely a bad idea and a dishwasher will dull the finish over time.

A non-abrasive sponge is all it needs. Treated properly these outlast every other mug in the cupboard.

Ceramic mugs

Dishwasher safe and microwave safe. The print is fired into the glaze rather than stuck on top, so it will not peel at the edges or wash pale.

Stickers and magnets

Vinyl stickers handle weather, sun and the back of a water bottle. Put them on a clean dry surface and press from the middle outwards.

Magnets are for the fridge, the toolbox, the filing cabinet. Not for the dishwasher.

Shirts and beanies

Cold wash, inside out, tumble low or hang dry. Do not iron directly over the print.

That is not fussiness for its own sake. It is the difference between a shirt that still looks right in two years and one that does not.

Payment and privacy

What can I pay with?

Debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. Prices are in US dollars.

Is my card information safe?

Payment details go straight to PayPal or the card processor and never touch our server. We never see your card number, and there is nothing on our end for anyone to steal.

What do you do with my details?

We keep your name, email, address and order details so we can make the thing, send it, and help if something goes wrong. Your address is passed on only where it has to be for the parcel to be produced and delivered. Nobody else sees any of it.

We do not sell, rent or trade customer data. Email us and we will delete whatever we are not legally required to keep. The full detail is on the privacy page.

Do prices include tax?

Prices are shown before tax. Sales tax is worked out at checkout based on where it is going, so the total you see before paying is the total you pay.

About us

Who is behind this?

A father and son in Louisville, Kentucky. We do the designing: the ideas, the artwork, and the argument most weeks about whether something is finished.

Nothing goes in the shop unless we both agree on it. Each piece is then made to order and sent straight to you. The longer version is on the our story page.

Is there really a person answering emails?

Yes, and usually within a business day. There are only two of us to choose from, so it is one of us. No ticket queue and no form maze.

Why is a gift shop named after the planet?

Because this planet is an island. One small, improbable rock spinning through an enormous dark, carrying everyone you have ever loved. The name was bought in 2012 and then sat in a drawer for over a decade until we found something worth putting it on.

Still not sure?

Ask a real person. One of us answers, usually within a business day.
