One small, improbable rock

Why a father and son named a gift shop after the whole planet.

The Island Earth started with a phrase that would not leave us alone. This planet is an island. One small, improbable rock, spinning through an enormous dark, carrying everyone you have ever loved.

The name was bought in 2012 with every intention of building something around that idea, and then life did what life does. Work came in. It sat in a drawer for over a decade.

What brought it back was designing things together. A father and a son, one shop, deciding what was worth putting a name on.

A father and son shop

Two of us, and a short argument most weeks about whether a design is finished. Nothing goes in the shop unless we both agree on it, which is a slower way to run a shop and a better way to end up with things worth keeping.

It is also why a real person answers your email. There are only two of us to choose from.

Custom pieces, made to order

Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting to be discounted. Each piece is produced after you order it and sent straight on. No dead stock, no clearance bins, no pressure to shift last season before we can make the next thing.

If you want something we do not make yet, ask. Custom work is most of the reason this exists.

Made for a person, not a demographic

Dad Life came first, because everybody knows a man who fixes what other people replace. Then Mom Life, the Pet Collection, Boat and Lake Life, and the one about arguing with computers.

We do not design for a category. We design for somebody you already have in mind.
